Made By Experts

With over 150 years experience

Dating back to 1840, Harrison Spinks is a fifth-generation family business that today employs over 600 people, from farmers who work on the Harrison Spinks' farm, to engineers developing leading edge technology, to craftsmen and women who still sew, side-stitch and tuft mattresses by hand.

Master Craftsmen

How our mattresses are made

From the skilled engineers that coil our Herdysleep pocket springs to the weavers that weave our chemical-free outer fabric, all components are made in-house in Harrison Spinks’ Yorkshire workshop before finally tufting, taping and edging each mattress by hand. By championing British industry in this way, we are helping to preserve the skills that have been nurtured for over 150 years.

Attention To Detail

Attaching the border

Whilst a Herdysleep mattress contains the latest in coiled spring technology, age-old traditional techniques are still used to make each mattress by hand. The border is carefully attached to the mattress core before the layer of micro-sized pocket springs and natural fillings are placed on top, all of which are then covered with a natural sleep surface made from Herdwick wool and soft cotton fibre.

A Quality Finish

Tufting and tape edging

Tufting is a traditional manufacturing method used in making mattresses. Tufts are driven through the entire mattress at regular intervals, securing all the layers of pocket springs and natural fibre topping in place. Herdysleep mattresses are hand-tufted to make sure that each one has the best possible finish. The final step in handcrafting a Herdysleep mattress is tape-edging. Our highly skilled craftspeople use a tape-edging machine to attach the sleep surface to the mattress borders.
